Who this bat suits
A low sweet spot puts the mass toward the bottom of the blade, which is where the ball meets the bat on drives and straight play. That makes this a front-foot player's bat. The heavier weight band, 2lb 9oz to 2lb 12oz, suits a stronger player who wants the ball to travel rather than one relying on quick hands.
Understanding Grade 3.1
Grade 3 willow has fewer and less uniform grains than Grade 1 or 2, and usually more colour variation or small marks on the face. None of that affects how the bat plays. What you give up is cosmetic consistency and a little longevity at the top end; what you keep is genuine English willow performance at a considerably lower price. For club cricket, this is the sensible end of the range.
Knocking-in
This bat needs knocking-in before it faces a hard ball. New English willow is soft, and the fibres in the face have to be compressed gradually — usually six to eight hours of work spread across several sessions. Skipping it is the most common reason a bat cracks in its first season, and no manufacturer warranty covers a bat that was not knocked in.
Our Houston workshop does this properly — add Pro Full Knocking to your order and the bat arrives ready to play. Turnaround is 4–6 days.
