English Willow vs. Kashmir Willow: Which Cricket Bat Should You Buy?
Every cricket bat is made from one of two types of willow, and the difference between them explains almost everything about how a bat feels, performs, and costs. Here's what actually separates them — and which one fits your game.
Where the Wood Comes From
English willow (Salix alba caerulea) is grown almost exclusively in the cooler, wetter climate of England, primarily in Essex and Kent. That slower growth produces a lighter, straighter-grained wood.
Kashmir willow is grown in the Kashmir Valley in India, in a warmer climate that produces denser, harder wood with a darker color and coarser grain.

The short version: English willow rewards good technique with more power and a lighter swing, but it demands more care. Kashmir willow trades some performance for durability and affordability, which makes it a practical entry point.
Grading: Not All English Willow Is Equal
English willow bats are graded — usually Grade 1 through Grade 4 — based on the number of straight grains visible on the face and the presence of any blemishes (small red/pink marks called "butterfly stains," which are cosmetic and don't affect performance).
- Grade 1: The cleanest, straightest-grained willow, reserved for premium and professional-level bats.
- Grade 2–3: Still high-performing, with a few more grains or minor cosmetic marks — often the best value in the English willow range.
- Grade 4: Entry-level English willow, a step up from Kashmir in feel, at a lower price than top-grade bats.
Kashmir willow isn't graded the same way, since the wood's characteristics are more uniform across the board.
Who Should Buy Which
Choose English willow if:
- You play club, school representative, or higher-level matches
- You want the lightest possible pick-up for your bat size
- You're willing to knock-in the bat properly and maintain it
Choose Kashmir willow if:
- You're new to the sport or buying for a junior still developing their swing
- You mainly play tennis-ball or social cricket
- You want a durable bat that can take some abuse without a big financial hit
