Why Junior Sizing Matters More Than You'd Think

An adult-sized bat in a child's hands doesn't just look wrong — it slows down bat speed, encourages poor technique, and can put a young player off the game before they've had a fair chance to enjoy it. The right size makes every skill easier to learn.

Cricket Bat Sizing by Height

Junior bats are sized numerically (the smaller the number, the smaller the bat). Use height as your primary guide, and when a child is between two sizes, size down — a slightly smaller bat is easier to control than one that's too long or heavy.

For a first bat, a durable Kashmir willow junior bat is usually the better investment — it holds up to backyard practice and mishits far better than English willow while a young player is still building fundamentals.

Batting Pads: Match to Height, Not Age

Pads are sized by height range rather than age, since growth spurts vary so much player to player.

A properly fitted pad should reach from just below the knee to just above the boot, with the straps snug enough not to slide during running between wickets.

Batting Gloves: Fit Over Function, Every Time

A helmet must fit snugly with no side-to-side movement and sit level on the head — this is a genuine safety issue, not just a comfort preference. Most junior helmets are sized S/M/L based on head circumference; measure around the head just above the eyebrows and match it to the manufacturer's chart rather than the printed age recommendation.
